GM Nigel Short simultaneous exhibition – 30 November 2005
English grandmaster Nigel Short finished off his New Zealand tour New Zealand tour in Dunedin by taking on 26 opponents at the Otago Chess Club. After 3½ hours of play all games were finished, Nigel conceding just two draws - to Duncan Watts and Quentin Johnson. The event was the highest profile one of its type for many years, and many thanks are owed to Nigel and Chris Benson of the Canterbury club who made it all happen.
Otago Primary/Intermediate Championship – 26 November 2005
This belatedly held event was smaller than usual, attracting 21 entries from schools around the Dunedin area - particularly well represented were DNI and Maori Hill Primary. The winner and 2005 Primary and Intermediate School champion was Patrick Dawson of DNI, who scored the maximum 5 points out of a possible 5. The result was close however, as Patrick overcame his closest rival Alex Ming-Wong of Maori Hill by the narrowest of margins in the final round. Alex shared 2nd= place on 4/5 with Ben Watts and Nabeelah Saib, who also took the best girl prize. The best team prize was also close - going to DNI's Patrick Dawson and Allyn Robins in the final round.

Otago Chess Club Rapid Championship – 17 November 2005
Top seed Quentin Johnson won this years title after scoring 4/6 in the second leg of the A grade, for a combined total of 9/12. The winner of this leg - Duncan Watts with 5½/6 will be rueing that he didn't compete in the 1st leg. However his score was enough to finish 3rd behind Don Storey who had a combined total of 6½.
Alistair Newbould took out the B grade overall with two solid performances totalling 8/12 ahead of David Reid and Craig Bourne on 6/12 in a closely fought grade.
The C grade provided a runaway win for John Armstrong though the large number of unfinished games from his rivals may have increased this margin. Second was Sandy Chandra and 3rd was shared by Muhammad & Nabeelah Saib and Jonathan Favel.
South Island and National School teams Championship in Christchurch – 17 October 2005
Two Dunedin schools – Kings HS and Dunedin Nth Intermediate sent teams up to Christchurch over the weekend to contest first the South Island final and, if successful the national final the following day. Alas the more experienced Christchurch teams from St Andrews HS and Cobham Intermediate were victorious over their Dunedin counterparts. However the National finals went the next day to the three Auckland schools who travelled down to contest them:
Secondary, Years 9 to 13 - Auckland Grammar
Intermediate, Years 7 to 8 - St Helier's School
Primary, Years 1 to 6- Epsom Normal School
With the Otago Daily times competition providing the chance for the Dunedin teams to sharpen their skills prior to next years finals, we can hope to provide a stronger challenge.
Otago Chess Club Championship – 1 October 2005
In yet another convincing performance, Richard Sutton has retained his title with a game in hand (currently on 7½/8) - making it four in a row from 2001 to 2005. With some games to play in the A grade 2nd= has gone to Tony Dowden (in his last club tournament for some time, alas) and Quentin Johnson on 7/9. While a very creditable 4th was earned by junior Andrew Stone, finishing on 5/9.

The B-grade 2nd leg was jointly won by Craig Bourne and Sandy Chandra on 5/6 followed by Terry Duffield and David Reid on 4 points. Now the combined scores leaves Duffield on 10/12 for 1st= and B-grade for 2005, followed by Chandra on 9/12 in 2nd and Bourne and Reid on 7/12 in 3rd= place. Apologies for the earlier mistake in the scores which had reversed the result of the game Duffield vs Bourne (won by Duffield).

Otago Daily Times School Teams Chess Championship
The final matches for this, the inaugural year of this competition will take place on Monday the 19th of September at the Otago Chess Club. Contesting the A grade final will be Otago Boys High School A, the winner of the round-robin tournament held over the third school term, and the runner up, Kings High School. OBHS A finished with a crushing 24 points out of a possible 28, but Kings HS was only 1½ points behind and had to default a game in their match with OBHS A, so the final should be a close contest.
The B grade final will be between Dunedin North Intermediate, who made a strong showing among the mostly secondary shool competition, and the OBHS B team. These two finished equal on 12 points so another close match is predicted.
The winners of each match will be the first teams to hold the Otago Daily Times School Teams Chess Championship trophy – Secondary and Intermediate grade respectively.

Otago Spring Rapid open – 27 August
Hamish Gold had his first success in this series of tournaments after many attempts and near misses. After beating 2nd seed Quentin Johnson in the third round and disposing of surprise co-leader Terry Duffield (who had just upset top seed Richard Sutton) in the 4th, Gold had a point lead with one round to play. Unfortunately his last game was against Sutton, who made sure lightning didn't strike twice in the same day – beating Gold to share first place. Li Ding, made up somewhat for failing to defend his junior title the previous weekend by winning his final round game vs Duffield to catch the leader and also share 1st on 4/5.
Nabeelah Saib and Alexander Ming-Wong each scored 3/5 to jointly win the U1400 grade. While Ben Dowden, Joel Smith and Samual Cathro all scored 2/5 to share the U1160 grade.

Otago/Southland Junior Championship 2005 – 20 August
Despite leading the field after four rounds with a maximum 4 points, defending champion Li Ding of Bayfield HS was not able to repeat last year's success, losing in the final two rounds to Otago University students Andrew Stone and Tim Riley. These two had drawn with each other in round 4 and won all their other games to finish 1st= on 5½/6 and as joint champion for 2005.
4 points proved a popular score with the other prizewinners:-
1st= Females: Josie Burrows & Nabeelah Saib
1st= under 16: Josie Burrows & Walker MacMurdo
1st= under 12: Nabeelah Saib & Alexander Ming-Wong (who had defended his under 10 title a week earlier)

Otago Queen's Birthday Weekend Open – 4-6 June 2005 by Quentin Johnson
The decision to reschedule the traditional Otago Easter Tournament to Queen's Birthday weekend this year was vindicated, despite the proximity to mid-year exams discouraging participation by any tertiary students. The healthy field of 22 included a strong turnout from the Wellington, Canterbury and Ashburton clubs for thhis Class 3 Global Chess Enterprises Grand Prix event, with a total prize fund just short of $600.
Clear favouritewas New Zealand Championship regular, Nic Croad, with the only other 2000+ rated players being fellow Wellingtonian Michael Turner and local Quentin Johnson. However, a solid bunch of players in the 1800-1900 range lurked just behind these three.
Round 1
The only upset was caused by 4th seed Duncan Watts dropping off the pace when he handed a powerful attack to Ashburton's Allan Mulligan. Mulligan won material and converted it to take the full point. Johnson was more fortunate after the early loss of an exchange when subsequent errors by veteran campaigner Bruce Gloistein gave more than adequate compensation.

Round 2
Five players made it to 2/2 in this round. Craod exploited Jackson's exposed king in an Anti-Meran Gambit. Turner eventually overcame Craig Hall's attempt to build a fortress in a Q vs R ending. Johnson picked up a couple of pawns and then a piece against Michael Nyberg. Ross McKerras's gambit proved quickly effective against Geoff Aimers and Peter Fraemohs accepted Mulligans early piece sac to halt his giant-killing ambitions.

Round 3
Craod prevailed in the ending over Fraemohs to set the pace on 3/3. Matching him was Johnson, when Turner left a rook hanging in time-trouble after a see-saw battle. The clock also played a part in Mckerras joining the leaders, after Luke Lambert lost on time in a drawish queen ending.

Round 4
Croad advanced to 4/4 by rounding up McKerras's Tarrasch isolani, with the queenside following in short order. This gave him a point lead as Johnson failed to take his chances in a scrappy game against Fraemohs – finaly falling to a back-rank mate. Turner and Jackson joined the group on 3 with respective wins over Aimers and Nyberg. Meanwhile the youngest competitor, 8 year old Alexander Ming-Wong's fortitude in fighting on after the early loss of his queen was rewarded with a win and the lead in the Junior section on 2 points.

Round 5
Turner's Catalan allowed Croad a comfortable opening – establishing a queenside passed pawn which ensured vitory in the eventual N ending. This result guaranteed outright 1st place for Nic, as the matches between the players on 3 points wre both draws: Johnson blundered back McKerras' gambit pawn early on, but McKerras did not make the most of his chances, while a draw was eventually agreed between Fraemohs and Jackson in what looked like a hairy game.

Round 6
With first prize sewn up, the final round was all about the minor placings: Jackson made an early claim for at least a share of 2nd on 4½ by winning a quick debacle over Turner. Johnson opted for an early Q-exchange with Croad, who didn't find the way to advantage so a draw resulted. Nyberg and Hall, with wins over Gloistein and Aimers joined Johnson on 4 points. However the final placings depended upon the result of McKerras – Fraemohs, the last pair on 3½ ...
Meanwhile Nijman claimed first place in the U1700 grade by turning the two minor pieces to account versus Watts' rook, finishing on 3½. He was followed by Gloistein, Mulligan, Rex Scarfe & Craig Bourne in a tie for 2nd (U1700) on 3 points. Muhammad Saib had a notable draw (though he should have won) against Hamish Gold to draw level with Ming-Wong on 2 points and share the Junior prize. Because of the imminent departure of many players from out of town, a premature prize-giving was held to award all those already decided.
Finally, the Fraemohs – McKerras game evolved to a R-ending with active rooks and few pawns, where McKerras's fleeting two-pawn advantage was not enough to avoid the inevitable draw. Thus Jackson took 2nd prize alone, followed by a five-way tie for 3rd between Fraemohs, Johnson, Mckerras, Nyberg and Hall.

1-0
Nic Croad's win was thoroughly deserved, as he dominated throughout and only dropped half a point after 1st was assured, while Jackson can also be pleased with a satisfying result in a strong field. As organiser, director and player, Johnson had an unenviable task, but the tournament was relatively free of incident – barring the last round when a kibitzing player who had finished mistakenly thought a draw had been agreed in another game and demonstrated a winning move on the board – happily no dispute ensued! Three players earned FIDE rating blocks (Jackson, Hall & Mulligan) and the event proved very enjoyable.
