Perpetual Handicap Championship – 17 December

The top improvers in the Standard Handicap over the year were: 1 Patrick Dawson (+63) , 2 Quentin Johnson (+35), 3 John Sutherland (+34).
The top improvers in the Rapid Handicap were: 1 Elliot Munro (+96) 2 Joseph Brown (+60), 3 Patrick Dawson (+53).

Summer 60-60 – 10 December

Top seed John Sutherland again finished on top in the final club tournament of the year with and unbeaten 4/5. Second seed Quentin Johnson was keeping up until the final round when he blundered a queen to Geoff Aimers. Aimers finished in a creditable second place with 3½ ahead of Johnson, David Reid, Hamish Gold and Joseph Brown on 3 points. OF particular note were the performances of junior Brown (who shared the lead going into the final round but lost to Sutherland) and Elliot Munro who made the most od his chances and fininshed on 2½ - both will receive a big rating boost.

Rapid Championship leg 2 – 5 November

Quentin Johnson and John Sutherland again shared the 2008 Senior Rapid Championship, with a combined total (over and equvalent of 12 games) of 8 points from the two legs. Third on 7 points was Hamish Gold who was unlucky not to share the title as he score on level terms with the top two seeds in games against each other (all scored 4/8 in the mini 4xround-robin) but his dropped game against Chris Lydiate in the first leg cost him a vital point. Patrick Dawson won the Intermediate trophy on the strength of his 5 points out of 6 in the first leg, while Elliot Munro's combined total of 10 points from 12 games easily won the Junior trophy.

Otago Club Championship 2008 – 24 September

John Sutherland successfully defended his title in the recently completed 2008 Otago Chess Club championship. The event was played as two consecutive 5-round tournaments with most participants facing each other twice. Sutherland was top seed in the A-grade ahead of Quentin Johnson, with a significant rating gap to the next highest ranked player. The top two duly won all their games against the rest of the field and exchanged close-fought wins against each other to finish equal first on 9/10 and share the title of 2008 Otago Club Champion. Third was Hamish Gold on 4 points followed by Brent Southgate (3), Terry Duffield (2½), Chris Lydiate (2) and John Armstrong (1½).
John Armstrong won the Intermediate Championship with a combined total of 7/10 ahead of Patrick Dawson and David Reid on 5 points. Dawson actually beat both his main rivals but missed too many games due to illness to take first.

Otago Junior Championship 2008 – 6 September

25 competed for the title of Otago Junior champion and the race was a close one this year. Defending champion and top seed Patrick Dawson (LPHS) lost an eary game to Daniel Sanson (Dunstan HS) leaving 2nd seed Elliot Nicholls (John McGlashan) to take a point lead over the field. However in the penultimate round these two played each other on top board and in a close struggle Patrick emerged victorious to catch up with Elliot. The both won their final game to finish 1st= and joint Otago Junior champion for 2008 on 6/7. Patrick also took out the U16 title. 3rd place went to Joseph Brown (Balmacewen) alone on 5½ who also took the U13 title in a fine performance. The top team prize also went to last year's winner: DNI old boys (Patrick Dawson, Allyn Robins & Campbell Calverly) ahead of Dunstan HS and OBHS in 2nd= position.
Seven rounds of gruelling chess saw some excellent and not so excellent play – but fun was had by all.

Otago Primary/Intermediate Championship 2008 – 23 August

A large turnout of 33 players to this year's championship from Dunedin and Otago areas as diverse as Oamaru, Queenstown and East Taieri saw a close finish. Just emerging ahead of the pack at the end of 7 rounds was Elliot Munro of DNI and Remi Ritchie of Arthurs St school on 6 points. Amazingly these two did not play each other in the course of the tournament, but they ahare the title of 2008 Otago Primary/intermediate Champion. In 3rd place alone came Joel Smith of Balmacewen Intermediate on 5½, in a great effort as he played both winners earning a win and a draw, but lost to Luke Nie. Luke (Waikari) was perhaps most unlucky, as he was co-leader going into the last round but lost to Remi, having played perhaps the toughest field. He shared 4th place on 5 points with Charlie Ruffman (DNI) , Blake McAlevey (DNI) and William Pelet (Balm). Best girl was Hannah Kim (St Hilda's) on 4 ½ and the best team prize was won by DNI ahead of a very strong effort by the young East Taieri team.
The event was very enjoyable and it was great to see such a turnout of enthuiastic young chess players.

Dunedin School Teams Championship Final 2008 played on Thursday 24 July at the Otago Chess Club

The Dunedin School Teams Chess Championship has been running throughout the second school term and at last the six finalists are known. The format as with previous years has been four-player teams in three grades, Secondary, Intermediate and Primary/Intermediate with a round-robin followed by a final playoff between the top two teams in each grade.
In the Secondary grade, defending champions Otago Boys High School won every match in the round-robin to finish first on 18 points out of a possible 24. In the final they faced first-time finalists Logan Park High School, who narrowly beat out John McGlashan College A, both teams finishing on 17½ game points, but LPHS having 4½ match points to John McGlashan's 4. Otago Boys won the final 3-1 to retain the trophy. Round-robin standings: 1 Otago Boys HS 18 (6), 2 Logan Park HS 17½ (4½), 3 John McGalshan College A 17½ (4), 4 Bayfield HS 13½ (3), 5 Columba College 7 (2), 6 Kings HS 4 (½), 7 John McGlashan B 2½ (0).
The Intermediate grade round-robin was won for the fourth consecutive year by defending champions Dunedin North Intermediate Black on 15/24. This year they faced another first-time finalist, Balmacewen Intermediate who finished clear second on 13½ game points. The final was a closely fought tie 2-2, which meant that DNI kept their title through having won the round-robin stage. Round-robin standings: 1 DNI Black 15 (4), 2 Blamacewen 13½ (3½), 3 Arthur Street 12½ (4), 4 John McGlashan Int. A 9½ (1½), 5 Brockville Full Primary 5½ (1½), 6 Tahuna Normal Int. A 4 (½).
The Primary/Intermediate grade, which features either true primary school teams or the second teams from some intermediate schools saw a repeat of the final of two years ago. The perennial victors, George Street Normal School once again took out the round-robin convincingly on 24/28 and were up against second placed Dunedin North Intermediate Red who finished on 19 points. George St made it a hat-trick of finals, winning 3-1. 1 George Street 24 (7), 2 DNI Red 19 (5), 3 John McGalshan College A 17½ (4), 4 Bayfield HS 13½ (3), 5 Columba College 7 (2), 6 Kings HS 4 (½), 7 John McGlashan B 2½ (0).

Secondary Grade

Rapid Championship leg 1 – 2 July
John Sutherland took the lead after the first leg of the 2008 Rapid championship by half a point over Quenti Johnson in the A-Grade. Patrick Dawson convincingly won the 1st leg of the B Grade with 5/6, while Terry Duffiled won the B+ garde that was instituted at short notice. New member Elliot Munro won the C grade and the D grade featured a three-way tie.

Handicap tourney – 4 June

For a bit of fun following the Queen's Birthday Open, the club held a material handicap tournament with 10 minutes each per game. Third seed Chris Lydiate showed that either he is underrated at this time-limit, or starting the odd piece down is of no consequence to him – winning all five games! Second equal were John Armstrong and Patrick Dawson on 3½. Both converted their queen advantage against top seed Quentin Johnson with little difficulty. Johnson finished tied for 4th on 3 points with Alistair Newbould and young firt-time visitor Joseph Brown, who had a strong showing.

Otago Queen's Birthday Open – 2 June

Top seed FM Nic Croad of Wellington easily finished a point clear of the 12 player field to record his third win in four years in this event, with 5½/6. Ross Jackson , also of Wellington, played well to achieve clear second.on 4½ just ahead of a three-way tie for third between Michale Nyberg (Wtgn), John Sutherland (Ot) and Quentin Johnson (Ot) on 4. The grade prize was jointly won by Arie Nijman (Canterbury) and Hamish Gold (Ot) on 3 points.

The outstanding feature of this year's event was the meagre turnout of just twelve players. A far cry from 38 in last year's tribute to Richard Sutton, and only half the usual number before that. As a class 2 Millenium Hotels Grand Prix event, the guaranteed prizemoney of $1425 was not enough attract players away from the Waitakere Open which has moved to the Queen's Birthday slot. Top seed and favourite this year was Wellington's FM Nicolas Croad, followed by two locals, John Sutherland and the writer.
All games went according to rating in round 1, except for Aimers – Cooper, where Geoff Aimers inexplicably failed to make his extra piece count and settled for a repetition draw after a couple of mistakes in a still advantageous position.
In round 2 Croad defeated fellow Wellingtonian Mike Nyberg with some style on board one, while Sutherland punished my hasty decision to recapture an unimportant pawn in an interesting bishop ending. Ross Jackson beat the hapless Aimers to share the lead, while bottom ranked Nigel Cooper exploited Hamish Gold's underdeveloped sense of danger on the h5-e8 diagonal after his recent adoption of the Dutch Defence to record his second upset in a row. Meanwhile Bruce Gloistein indicated that this was not be his tournament in blundering away his game against fellow Canterbrian Simon Ward.
The third round saw Croad defeat Jackson but not without some trouble. Ross played an unambitious QGD exchange with White but still managed to win a pawn and looked on top until he fell into a knight fork losing the exchange and his extra pawns – Croad made sure of the win thereafter. Cooper's run of luck ended against Sutherland who thus stayed level with Croad. An oversight nearly cost me the game versus Ward, but a series of small mistakes by my opponent gradually tipped the balance back in my favour. Nyberg also bounced back with a win over veteran Arie Nijman after the latter dropped the exchange.
The decisive battle between the leaders in round 4 was a Czech Benoni in which Sutherland looked horribly cramped for much of it but Croad was only able to break through after black went astray having been under pressure throughout. I was unable to win the exchange up against Jackson having missed a better continuation by overlooking an obvious defence to the one I chose. Nyberg kept up the pursuit via a win over Aimers while Terry Duffiled and Gloistein conspired to produce an awful game – Gloistein being the last player to spurn the win in favour of the other.
Round 5 saw the final result stay in doubt when Croad – Johnson finished in a draw. Mutual errors saw the advantage switch a couple of times before Croad emerged a pawn up in a tricky but winning rook endgame, but a final slip cost his king its check-shelter just as the win was within his grasp. Sutherland's fishy opening gambit was snapped up by Nyberg who proved it gave no compensation whatsover to move within half a point of the lead, and this win also earned him the upset prize. Jackson finally mated Ward to stay in touch. Scores: Croad 4½, Nyberg 4, Jackson 3½, Sutherland, Johnson & Nijman 3.
The final round saw some diving down the field with only twelve players, so Croad made short work on Nijman to deservedly record his third victory in Otago in four years. I beat Cooper and Sutherland beat Aimers to make a claim for some prizemoney, but it all came down to Nyberg – Jackson on board 2. Nyberg was the aggressor, but missed a chance to retain his spearhead on e5 by tactical means. Eventually his attack proved to be worth less than the pawn invested, so Jackson came from behind to take clear second place ahead of the three-way tie for third between Nyberg, Sutherland and myself. The grade prize was shared by the indefatigible Nijman and Gold, who inflicted Gloistein sixth loss to reach 3 points. The final game to finish saw Duffield cap off a similarly disappointing event by turning a win into a loss against Ward in a couple of moves after good play until then.

All in all avery enjoyable event, and the small size made it easy to run. Unfortunately the low turnout means that it unlikely that Otago will hold a six-round FIDE rated open on Queen's Birthday again. The alternative could be to hold a five-round event on an ordinary weekend in May, but that is not very attractive to those travelling from further afield. The South Island Championship could soon become the only significant event down this way if the trend continues.

Cleland Trophy – 28 May

John Sutherland and Quentin Johnson shared the 2008 Cleland Trophy. Sutherland beat Johnson in round 2 but then conceded draws to Hamish Gold and Chis Lydiate to drop back to the same score. Terry Duffield, who was co-leader after 4 rounds before losing to Johnson in round 5, won in the final round to finish third on 4 points.

Swiss Standard – 9 April

FM Richard Sutton showed he is still a force to be reckoned with after an absence from club events by winning the Swiss Standrd tournament with 4/4. Owing to mutual byes he didn't meet his main rival John Sutherland who fininshed on 3/3 tied for secong with Geoff Aimers and Hamish Gold on 3/5. A notable showing was Patrick Dawson's 5th place on 2½ /5. Richard has annotated hi s games against Hamish here in pgn

The first club tournament of the year resulted in the 3-way tie for 1st between Hamish Gold, Geoff Aimers and David Reid on 4/6. Alistair Newbould performed well to finish 4th on 3½ despite taking two byes.
