Thorben conceded just one draw to Quentin Johnson, then defeated main rivals Bob Wansink and John Sutherland in round four and five to finish clear first on 4½/5. Second was Wansink on 4 points, losing only to Koop. Third was shared by Johnson and Hamish Gold on 3½. This won Gold the U1800 grade prize, while the U1300 grade was shared in the threeway tie between Logan Xu, Nathan Xu and Sam Thompson on 2½. Nathan aslo won the upset prize for his round 3 win over Ben Clayton.
The Westpac Trophy, not competed for since 1999 was won by Bob Wansink – whose two 100% scores in the Autumn and Winter events gave him an unbeatable lead.

Richard Sutton Trophy – 28 November

The last trophy tournament of the Wednesday calendar resulted in a tie for first between defending trophy-holder Bob Wansink and Quentin Johnson on 5/6. The time of year resulted in only one player (Wansink) playing every round, so he met by far the stronger field, as the other main contenders were not available in the final round. There was a large tie for third place on 3½ between Thorben Koop, Hamish Gold, Leighton Nicholls, Ben Clayton and Elliot Munro. Worthy of particular mention is Clayton's result against a strong field, gaining a number of rating points.

Club Rapid Championship – 31 October

The final game of the 2012 Championship was completed on 31 October, hence the late story. As indicated on the main page, Thorben Koop won the Senior Championship with 5/6 in the A Grade, followed by Defending Champion Bob Wansink on 3. Robert Macway Jones proved the inaccuracy of his rapid rating by winning the B Grade with 4/6 and taking out the Intermediate championship for 2012. Brent Southgate was the higheest scorer in the C1 grade on 4½/6, so wins the Junior Champinship for 2012. Owing to a late entry last year's Junior champion Elliot Munro was placed in a mismatched grade, so his 6/6 was not enough. As last year, the scores are compared between grades with a 50% weighting factor in the second crosstable below.

South Island Championship 2012 – 10-14 October

This year's event was hosted by the Otago Chess Club in Dunedin and run as part of both the Yulgilbar – Think Big Oceania Grand Prix and the Myer Tan NZ Grand Prix. The field of 31 was strengthened immensely by the participation of three overseas players from the George Trundle Masters held the previous week. GM Darryl Johansen and IM Gary Lane from Australia and IM Peng Kong Chan from Singapore made the journey down and were easily the top three seeds. FMs Bob Smith and Stephen Lukey were among those expected to provide close competition. Lesser known quantities were current Otago champion Bob Wansink, playing in an open event after a long layoff, 15 year old German student Thorben Koop, who had performed at 2700 then 2000 at his last two events, and former local, NM Tony Dowden making the trip over from Tasmania. Of these only Lukey and Wansink were eligible for the South Island title, with a few hopeful former champions lurking outside the top eight.

Round 1
Only two draws were conceded by the top half, though it should have been more. Canterbury junior, Tim Rains, needlessly allowed Quentin Johnson off with a perpetual, thus passing up an opportunity for an unbeatable claim to the DD Smash upset prize, while Peter Fraemohs won from a worse ending against Terry Duffield.

Round 1.7, Cooper, Nigel - Koop, Thorben
1.c3 c5 2.f4 Nc6 3.Nf3 d5 4.g3 Nf6 5.Bg2 e6 6.O-O b6 7.Ne5 Bd7 8.Nxc6 Bxc6 9.c4 Qd7 10.cxd5 exd5 11.d3 d4 12.Bxc6 Qxc6 13.e4 dxe3 14.Qf3 Qxf3 15.Rxf3 O-O-O 16.Rxe3 c4 17.Kf1 Bc5 18.Rf3 Ng4 19.Kg2 Rhe8 20.Nc3 Re1 21.dxc4 Rg1+ 22.Kh3 Nf2+ 23.Kh4 Be7+ 24.Kh5 g6+ 25.Kh6 Ng4+ 26.Kg7 Bf6+ 27.Kxf7 Rd7+ 28.Kf8 Nh6 29.Ne4 Rd8# 0-1

Round 2
One of the favourites fell when Chan blundered a rook in a level ending against Fraemohs. Johansen was not unduly troubled by Dowden's pawn sacrifice on top board, but Lane had to work hard on board 2 to win a drawn double rook ending against WFM Helen Milligan. Lukey conjured up a rook sacrifice to mate Dan Dolejs, while Wansink, Bob Smith and Koop rounded out the group on 2/2.

Round 2.5, Lukey, Stephen - Dolejs, Dan
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 c6 5.Bg5 Be7 6.e3 Nbd7 7.Rc1 O-O 8.cxd5 Nxd5 9.Bxe7 Qxe7 10.Ne4 N7f6 11.Nc5 Nd7 12.Bd3 g6 13.h4 N5f6 14.h5 Nxh5 15.Ne5 Nxe5 16.dxe5 Qg5 17.g4 Ng7 18.f4 Qd8 19.g5 Qa5+ 20.Kf2 b6 21.Ne4 Ne8 22.Rxh7! Kxh7 23.Qh1+ Kg8 24.Qh6 f5 25.Qxg6+ Ng7 26.Nf6+ 1-0

Round 3
Against Bob Smith, Johansen was again the recipient of a pawn sacrifice - and again was able to keep the material and beat off the attack. Lane's control of d5 soon told after a Lukey error in a Sveshnikov Sicilian. Wansink's rook and pawns prevailed over Koop's two rooks in a prolonged ending, while Fraemohs stayed with the leaders after turning around a precarious king position against Johnson to win in the ending. Further down the table Milligan suffered an upset loss to Mike Roberts when she lost the base of her pawn chain, while Ross Jackson sacrificed unsoundly against Duffield and then lost on time. Local juniors Ben Clayton and Leighton Nicholls both played good rook endings, respectively drawing with Dolejs and beating Ross Black.

Round 4
Wansink defended a KID Averbakh to hold the draw against Johansen, utilising analysis by his opponent published in NZ Chess! This allowed Lane to take the sole lead by outplaying Fraemohs and end his winning run. Chan, Lukey, Bob Smith and Koop all won to stay in touch with the leaders. Lower down, Johnson blundered a piece and was lucky to bamboozle Nicholls in the ending, Dolejs achieved an interesting fortress with R+N against Duffield's Q, and Hamish Gold attacked vigorously to inflict Jackson's third loss in a row.

Round 5
There was an outbreak of short draws on the top boards as players sought to conserve energy mid-tournament. Lane-Johansen was 13 moves , while Wansink-Lukey lasted 11. This allowed Chan to join the group in second place in a miniature over Koop, who got his queenside pieces in a tangle. Bob Smith also caught up after FRaemohs jettisoned a pawn in the opening. Dowden-Johnson was an up-and-down game that ended prematurely when Johnson overstepped the time limit in a tricky minor piece ending. Nigel Cooper's piece sac was unsound against Edward Rains, while Bruce Gloistein caught Michael Roberts in a nasty trap. Jackson had narrowly avoided the bye this round and began his comeback campaign with a win over local junior Carlssen van Rooyen.
Leading Scores: Lane 4½; Johansen, Wansink, Chan & R. Smith 4; Lukey & Dowden 3½.

Round 6
Lane-Chan and Smith-Wansink were level games that ended in draws on the top two boards. Johansen caught Lane in the lead with a win over Lukey when the latter had to imprison his bishop on h8 for a critical part of the game after overlooking a tactic. Dowden picked off a pawn and won the ending against Edward Rains to stay with the leaders. Meanwhile, Johnson was the beneficiary of Gold's resignation in a drawn position, Gloistein-Dolejs produced the sort of chaos expected of these two, ending in a win to Dolejs, and Duffield's Grob garnered a draw from Andrew Brockway. Jackson continued his revival, taking a point from Viv Smith in a game that cannot be deciphered past move ten.
Leading Scores: Lane & Johansen 5; Wansink, Chan, R. Smith & Dowden 4½.

Round 7
On top board Johansen as Black accepted an early draw offer from Chan. This allowed Lane to once more take the sole lead by beating Wansink after the latter finally faltered under pressure. Neither Dowden nor Bob Smith caught up with Johansen, as the latter accepted the former's draw offer. Fraemohs-Koop also ended in a draw, while Lukey beat Johnson to join Wansink and Fraemohs as the leading South Islanders. Duffield was the recipient of a blunder by Roberts to continue his good tournament, but veteran campaigner Arie Nijman was caught by an intriguing combination from Ross Black after neglecting his development a move too far. Jackson climbed back up to 50% when his 4-pawns attack subdued Tim Rains, but Gold was not so successful with his piece sacrifice against Gloistein and caught the bye for the following round.
Leading Scores: Lane 6; Johansen 5½; Chan, R. Smith & Dowden 5; Wansink, Koop, Fraemohs & Lukey 4½.

Round 8
Lane ventured a pawn sacrifice as black in an Exchange Slav to beat Bob Smith and retain his lead (see ODT column 30 October for analysis of this game). Johansen was made to work hard by Koop in a queen and opposite colured bishop ending, but eventually ground out the full point. The gap to third widened to a point when Dowden and Chan drew their game, allowing Wansink and Lukey to join them with relatively easy wins. Wansink's piece sacrifice on move 4 seemed to surprize Fraemohs so much he immediately blundered and resigned the next move - full game below. Lukey received the down-float to Duffield, and soon White's overcautious play lead to his four minor pieces' mobility being restricted to one square between them! Milligan won well from Edward Rains to join Smith on +2 and lead the U2100 grade. Black beat Dolejs in another tactical flurry, while Gloistein and Brockway drew to join Duffield in leading the U1800 grade, as did Nicholls with a good win over Nijman.
Leading Scores: Lane 7; Johansen 6½; Chan, Dowden, Wansink & Lukey 5½, R. Smith & Milligan 5.

Round 9
The sun finally shone on the final morning, refuting claims about Dunedin weather from some visitors, and necessitating an improvised extra curtain to block the sunlight from shining in players' eyes. Lane beat Dowden to secure outright first, when the latter allowed his defensive dark-square bishop to be exchanged in a typical IQP position. Milligan's choice of the KID slowed the game against Johansen, but eventually White was better on the queenside, the kingside and the centre. Chan-Wansink was a short draw, both players satisfied with their previous efforts, while Lukey-R. Smith was drawn shortly afterward. This left Chan, Wansink and Lukey sharing third place with Wansink and Lukey sharing the South Island Championship title for 2012. Koop beat Johnson to join Smith and Dowden on 5½, as did Fraemohs, whose connected passed pawns rode over Ross Black's king. This gave Koop the Junior prize and left Fraemohs first in the U2100 grade, followed by Milligan and Jackson, who finally climbed to the upper half of the table with a fine win over Roberts. All the U1800 leaders drew to win, leaving a 5-way tie for first on 4½ between Duffield, Brockway, Nicholls, Gloistein, and Viv Smith who ground out a win over Tim Rains in the last game to finish to join the prizewinners. The DD Smash Upset prize went to Fraemohs for his round 2 win over IM Chan. The tournament was well run by FA Craig Hall, with no disputes to settle and regular postings of the draw in a timely manner.

Otago Spring Rapid Open – 1 September

Thorben Koop is certainly dominating local events. He won the Otago Spring Rapid Open with a clean score of 5/5. This event saw the welcome addition of three Christchurch players in the field of 16: Edward & Tim Rains and Heesung Park travelled down to Dunedin and back on a long, but successful day. Edward finished in second place on 4 points, losing only to Koop. His defeat of the top seed Bob Wansink in round 3 also won the upset prize. Third was shared by Wansink, Quentin Johnson, Tim Rains and Leighton Nicholls on 3 points. The U1400 grade prize was shared by Naser Tamimi and Charlie Li on 2½. The next edition is the Summer Rapid Open on 1 December.

Otago Junior Championship – 11 August

As with the Primary Intermediate the week before, the 2012 Otago Junior was just over half the size of last year. The same contingent of four intrepid raiders came down from Christchurch as last year , but no players other than these came from outside Dunedin. Top seed, on the basis of his FIDE rating, was Thorben Koop, an exchage student from Germany at Kings High School. This proved to be accurate for Rapid, as he took out the Championhip and the JJ Marlow Trophy with six straight wins. Joint winners last year, Edward Rains (CBHS), Tim Rains (CBHS) and Leighton Nicholls (Home), were not able to mount a challenge. Edward came closest with 5/6 for clear second place, but lost a piece to a combination in his game with Thorben who made no mistake. Third place on 4 points was shared by Tim Rains, Elliot Munro (OBHS), David Moratti (OBHS), Ben Clayton (Tahuna Intermediate). Ben also took out the under 13 grade prize. Second in the grade on 3/6 were Charli Li (DNI), Sean Lau (OBHS), Ethan Lau (Maori Hill) and Jessica Rains (Cobham Intermediate) – with Jessica also winning the Best Girl prize. The team prize went to CBHS (Tim and Edward Rains and Heesung Park).

Otago/Southland Primary-Intermediate Individual Championship – 4 August

The 2012 event was just over half the size of last year on a rainy Dunedin afternoon, but strong field of 20 nonetheless. Defending co-champion Ben Clayton (12, Tahuna) reached 5/5 and then drew in the last round with his most dangerous rival, Charlie Li (11, DNI) to take clear first on 5½/6. Charlie finished second alone of 4½, having dropped a point to Joe Mckee (10, Maori Hill) with a careless move in round 2. Joe had a great tournament to finish in a 3-way tie for third place on 4 points with Ryan Lau (11, Balmacewen) and Ethan Lau (9. Maori Hill). Joe and Ethan shared first equal in the 10-and-under grade. The Best Girl was Abby Clayton (9, St Clair) on 1½, and the best non-Dunedinite was Stephen Potter (9, St Theresa) who finshed just outside of the main prizes on 3½. the Best Team prize went to Maori Hill: Ethan Lau, Max Lough (10) and Samuel Leaper (10) on a combined score of 10½.

Shuffle chess tournament – 25 July

This year the order of the pieces was revised every round of a 7-player round-robin played with 3 minutes plus 2 seconds a move. New member Thorben Koop from Germany showed he is a player to be reckoned with by taking out this novelty event with 6/6. Bob Wansink was next on 5, 3-4 Leighton Nicholls and Quentin Johnson on 3, 5 John Calder of 2 and 6-7 Ben Clayton and Joel Smith on 1.

Club Championship – 18 July

The first leg of the 2012 Club Championship was a tail of two tournaments. The A grade was unusually orderly in its execution and results. Top seed Bob Wansink dropped only half a point to defending champion Quentin Johnson in notiching up a score of 4½/5, ahead of Johnson on 4, John Sutherland on 3½, Geoff Aimers on 2, Hamish Gold on 1 and Brent Southgate on 0. In fact that draw and the other between Johnson and Sutherland were the only results not to go to the higher rated player. Not to say that there wern't many opportunities for greater upstes that went begging during the games.
The B grade was a less orderly affair, not least because the many absences during the early rounds and a tiny C-grade resulted in the practical decision to collapse the two grades into a single swiss with a view to ensuring some games got played. The idea was to limit players to a maximum of five games to provide relative parity and the swiss ensured the leading players met each other. The much closer competition also lead to many more upsets than the A-grade. The result was a win to up-and-coming Leighton Nicholls on 3½/5 who now qualifies for the A-Grade in the second leg. He was followed by Eliiot Munro on 3/3, who entered late and thus was out of contention, then Ben Clayton on 2½/4 making the most of his unexpected promotion to the B-Grade and Terry Duffield on 2½/5.

Winter Rapid Open – 30 June

The second Seasonal Rapid Open, the Winter Rapid attracted a field of 14 players. Again there was a large spread of ratings, from top seed Bob Wansink to unrated Samuel Leaper and Sam Thompson. Again Wansink dominated, this time with 7/7, though not without moments of serious danger. Second and third also went to seeding, John Sutherland on 6 and Quentin Johnson on 5 points respectively. Fourth was shared by Elliot Munro, who came tantalisingly close to taking points off the top three, Leighton Nicholl and Taine Box on 4 points. This result earned Taine the U1400 grade prize, while second was shared by Charlie Li, Sam Leaper, Sean Lau and Ryan Lau on 3 points. Sam Leaper also picked up the bonus upset prize for hi win over Sean in the first round. The next similar event is the Spring Rapid on Saturday 1 September.

Otago/Southland Secondary Interschool Teams Championship 2012 – 16 June

Otago Boys High School A fielded the same team that won the event last year and emerged the convincing winners on 30/32. Top board Elliot Munro and third board Joe Brown both scored a maximum 8/8, while Tom Mottershead (2) and Joel Smith (4) only dropped one game each. Runners-up were again Logan Park HS, and again the overall result came down to a final round contest between these two teams. However, LPHS without their board one for the previous several years were no match this year and were decisively beaten 4-0 to finish six point adrift on 24 points. Third were the young OBHS B team who scored an outstanding 22 points, showing that if the same four players had played in the Intermediate grade for Balmacewen (which didn't enter) last year they would have been very strong. John McGlashan A finished 4th with a relatively young team on 17½, showing future promise. While the Wakatipu team finisheed very creditably on the same score (but gained few match points) for fifth. It was good to see representatives from outside Dunedin and the Wakatipu and Northen Southland College teams were very welcome participants.
As usual there were a disappointingly high number of Scholar's Mates or variants thereof played during the event. Joe Brown (OBHS A) won the shortest game when his opponent ventured a Fool's Mate (1 f3? e5 2 g4??? Qh4#) and he also managed to carry out a slightly more taxing Legal's Mate in the final round.

Otago/Southland Intermediate Interschool Teams Championship 2012 – 10 June

Southland Boys HS showed a big improvement on last year to win a closely contested event with 21½/28, ahead of 13 other teams. Their win was spearheaded by Josh Hansen with a perfect 7/7 on board three. The trophy goes to a Southland school for the first time, and they win the right to represent the region in Palmerston North in September. Runners up with 19½ points were the defending champions, Tahuna Normal Intermediate, not quite able to match last years' performance, though board one Ben Clayton also managed to score a maximum 7 points. They were closely followed by the hosts, DNI A on 19 points in third place.

After three of six round the lead is shared by Bob Wansink and Quentin Johnson on 3/3, John Sutherland having taken a bye in round 3. Chasing on 2 points are Hamish Gold, Geoff Aimers, Elliot Munro and John Calder.
Update 6 June:

Johnson beat Wansink in a timescramble to take the lead in round 4, which he managed to retain to the end despite a draw with Gold in round 5, finishing on 5½/6. Wansink was second on 5, and had to work harder than he expected to overcome Leighton Nicholls in the last round.
