Club Championship – 16 October

The second leg of the 2013 Club Championship was wrapped up on the same night as the transfer tournament. In the A grade top seed Bob Wansink scored a picket fence 5/5, ahead of John Sutherland 4 and the fast improving Leighton Nicholls on 2½. This easily earned Wansink his second Senior Championship title in a row, on the impressive aggregate score of 9½/10. Sutherland's strong showing the second leg hauled him up to second overall on 6 points, followed by Nicholls and Quentin Johnson tied for third on 5½ points – A great result for Leighton in his first year starting in the A Grade.
The B grade suffred from a pairing error in the sxith and final round, when leading contenders Charlie Li and Brent Southgate were paired against each other for the second time, as they had yet to finish their fifth round game. As a result, they couldn't play six rounds and the scores used for deciding the championhip are those after the fifth round, unless fewer than 6 rounds were played by the player in question: Li and Shannon Davie 4/5, Southgate 3½, John Armstrong, David Reid, Bob Clarkson & John Calder 2½ etc. The final result was the threeway tie for the Intermediate Championship title in the aggregate score of 6½/10 between Davie, Southgate and Li, followed by Armstrong in 4th on 6 points. The result was outstanding for 13 year old Charlie Li in his first championship, and clearly earned him the Junior Championship title as well, ahead of Naser Tamimi on 5 points and John Calder on 3½.

Otago/Southland Junior Championship – 17 August

30 players turned out for the 2013 Otago/Southland Junior Championship, spanning from Christchurch in the North to Invercargill in the South, and Wanaka in the West. The top seed were the two Rains brothers Tim and Edward traveeling down from Christchurch, followed by locals Leight Nicholls and Ben Clayton, with Benedikt Hilmes, on exchange from Germany, something of an unknown quantity, as was David Marshall from Invercargill. When the top eeds benag to meet in round 3, Ed Rains downed Clayton while Tim Rains accounted for Hilmes, leaving on the Rains brother and Nicholls on 3/3, Marshall, having drawn with Primary/Interdiate Champion Charlie Li in round 2. Round 4 saw Edward defeat his brother Tim on board 1, while Nicholls stayed with him by beating Li in a pawn endgame. Meanwhile Hilmes had some luck to beat Marshall in a knight vs Rook ending after earlier miscalculating to lose a piece. In the game between the leaders in round 5, Edward Rains was pressing with Black on the queenside, while Nicholls held the position and maintained kingside counterplay. As time ran down for both players Edward sacced material trying to disorient his opponent, but Leighton hoovered it all up in a blitz finish. Both clocks went over the time limit within a split second with neither player able to claim a win, so a excting draw was the result. Tim Rains beat Joe McKee with a risky sacrifice that turned out well when McKee made an illegal move and the only legal move by the same pieces allowed mate in one. Clayton also stayed in the frame by defeating Hilmes after luring him into a cunning trap that won queen for rook and knight. Jessica Rains was the last player on 4 points, followed by Marshall and Li on 3½. In the final round, Ed Rains quickly beat his sister Jessica to ensure at least equal first. Claton and Li agreed a draw ensuring 3rd= for Ben and a share of the under 13 prize for Charlie. David Marshall won to join Clayton in third place on 4½. In the last game to finish, Leight Nicholls won against Tim Rains on board one to join Ed Rains in first place on 5½/6, and win JJ Marlow trophy and the title of Otago/Southland Junior Champion for the second time.
The prize winners were:
Leighton Nicholls: 1st= and Otago/Southland Junior Champion 2013 (winner of JJ Marlow Trophy)
Edward Rains 1st= (ineligible for title as from chch)
Ben Clayton 3rd= and under 15 prize

Otago/Southland Primary-Intermediate Individual Championship – 3 August

This year saw a healthy field of 26 players turn out at the Otago Chess Club. Last year's runner up and top seed Charlie Li (12, DNI) drew with his closest rival Joe Mckee (11, Balmacewen) in round 2, winning all his other games to finish first on 5½/6. Joe kept pace until the final round, when he drew with William Scharpf (10, DNI) to finish second on 5 points. William and Chance Gibbons (12, Oamaru Int) were the only players to win their first three games, and William won their clash in round four to reach 4/4. He then went down to DNI teammate Charlie Li in the round five, but finished tied for third with Max Lough (11, Balmacewen) on 4½. This also gave William the first prize in the under 10 grade. Second in the under 10 grade were Ethan Lu (10, Maori Hill) and Zishen Fu (9, George St Normal) on 4 points. The Best Girl was Renee Mullins (11, DNI) on 3. The Best Team prize went to Balmacewen: Joe McKee, Max Lough & Ryan Lau (12) on a combined score of 13½, just half a point ahead on the DNI team.

Club Championship – 24 July

The first leg of the 2013 Club Championship was wrapped up on the same night as the shuffle tournament. In the A grade top seed Bob Wansink dropped only half a point to Quentin Johnson in notiching up a score of 4½/5. So far so expected. The surprise of the event was the strong showing by the fast-improving Leighton Nicholls, who lost only to Wansink and beat Johnson and Gold to end up on a healthly score of 3 points, just behind Johnson on 3½, but well ahead of second seed John Sutherland on 2 points, Geoff Aimers on 1½ and Hamish Gold on ½.
The B grade was shortened to five rounds after a very low turnout on what woiuld have been the second round meant that it was easier to defer the round. John Armstrong set the pace throughout, and was only hauled back in the final round by a narrow loss to top seeded Terry Duffiled in an opposite bishop ending in the final round. This left Duffield and Armstrong tied on 3½/5. The experienced Brent Southgate and two promising juniors, Ben Clayton and Naser Tamimi followed on 3 points, with two club newcomers Charlie Li and Shannon Davie next on 2½.

Shuffle tournament – 24 July

Bob Wansink was the convincing winner of this 5-round swiss with 5/5. He negotiated the minelfield of tactical possibilities provided by the unusual starting positions the best at the fast time limit of 5 mins plus 3 seconds Bronstein. It proved a great leveller for the rest – with four players finishing tied for 2nd on 3 points. Final scores: 1 Wansink 5/5; 2-5 Quentin Johnson, Leighton Nicholls, Shannon Davie & Naser Tamimi 3; 6 Ben Clayton 2½; 7-8 Brent Southgate & John Calder 2; 9 John Armstrong 1½; 10 Jed McCammon 0.

Otago/Southland Intermediate Interschool Teams Championship 2013 – 7 July

Twelve teams competed from the 2013 Intermediate Interschool teams Championship, held at the DNI school hall on Sunday 7 July. With the absence fo any Southland teams, including defending champions Southland BHS, the only teams from outside Dunedin were the welcome entries from Oamaru Intermediate School. It became apparent that Balmacewen 1 were the team to beat, after they won 3-1 over the DNI 1 team in round 2. The Balmacewen team dropped only one other point – to Oamaru B in round four, winning all their remaining matches 4-0. Their winning score of 26 points fom a possible 28 was one of the most dominant on record. The battle for the minor places was much closer, with DNI 1 on 21½ in second place just edging out Oamaru A on 20½ in third.
Top board scorers were board one: Joe McKee of Balmacewen 1 and Charlie Li of DNI 1, both on 6½/7. Board two: Max Lough of Balmacewen 1 on the maximum 7/7. Board three: Ryan Lau of Balmacewen and Ethan Johnston of Oamaru A both on 6/7. Board four: Sam Thompson of Balmacewen 1 and Reuben Bosworth of DNI 1 both on 6½/7.
The event was great fun and thanks again to DNI school for providing a fantastic venue.

Otago/Southland Primary Interschool Teams Championship 2013 – 6 July

Thirteen teams turned out for the 2013 Primary Interschool teams Championship, held at the DNI school hall on Saturday 6 July. Nine of these were from Invercargill, with a much diminished Dunedin turnout of four teams. After three very close rounds there was a tie for the lead between the Enrich @ ILT 1 team and the defending champions, Maori Hill. These two teams faced each other in round 4, with the Enrich team winning by the narrowest margin, 2½-1½, as they had done over the George St Normal team in the previous round. After this the Enrich 1 team pulled away with full points ffrom the remaining three rounds, to win comfortably on 23½ points out of a possible 28. Maori Hill kept in the hunt in round five with a 2½-1½ win over George St, but then suffered a catastrophic 3-1 loss in round six to the Enrich 3 team. This allowed George St to surge ahead with a 4-0 win over Enrich 6. In a tense final round, every point counted to determine who would secoond to Enrich 1, and thus qualify to represent the Otago/Southland in the national interschool finals in Mt Maunganui in September. George St's 1½ point lead proved just enough.: They drew 2-2 with Enrich 4, putting them second on 17½, out of range of all pursuers except Maori Hill, whose 3-1 win over Otatara A left them half a point short on 17 points in third place.
Key to Enrich 1's success was the high scores on boards 1, 2 and 4: Luke Harvey's 6/7 on board one Clara Voogt's 5½/7 on board three and Thomas Walker's 7/7 on board four were the top scores on these boards. On board three, Zishen Fu of George St and Geoffrey Perriam of Enrich 7 both top-scored with 6/7.
The event was great fun and thanks to DNI school for providing a fantastic venue.

Otago/Southland Secondary Interschool Teams Championship 2013 – 22 June

Defending champions, Otago Boys High School A, were the out and out favorites in a reduced filed of five teams for the 2013 event. No other team could take a point off them, and so they emerged the wnners on 32 points out of a possible 32 in the double round-robin. The team of Tom Mottershead, Elliot Munro, Naser Tamimi and Joel Smith was substantially the same as the team that won last year, and should have good prospects in the national finals in Mt Maunganui in Sepetember. The runners up were The OBHS B team, again mostly the same as last year's, showing that OBHS chess has a strong future.
The cancellations of Logan Park High School due to illness and Wakatipu High School due to the weather, depleted the field substantially. But he event was fun and a good way to spend a very cold afternoon indoors.

Swiss Rapid – 24 April

The top two seeds John Sutherland and Quentin Johnson took several byes each in this event, which kept the race for first wide open until the end. After the fifth round, after a string of 4 upset wins, bottom seeded Naser Tamimi held the lead with Johnson. Going into the final evening, Sutheland, Johnson and fourth-seeded Geoff Aimers shared the lead on 4½/6 ahead of Tamimi on 4. The game Sutherland-Johnson was decided in favour of Black in the time scramble, when Sutherland jettisoned a rook, while Aimers kept up by defeating Tamimi. In the final round, Aimers was held to a draw by Leighton Nicholls, while Johnson won against Tamimi to finish first on 6½/8. Aimers was second on 6, Sutherland third on 5½, while Nicholls' last round result earned him fourth place on 4½. Naser Tamimi's result of 4/8 was 3½ points higher than his expected score, so should result in a large jump in his rating.

Alan Chang Memorial – 27 March

Top seed John Sutherland won the Alan Change 10 minute hourglass tournament with a 5½/6. He very nearly ceded the trophy after messing up against Leighton Nicholls a nd losing the exchange, but Nicholls could not find the way to win the ending in the time control and offered a draw. This would have been the greatest upset in the tournament and thus won the Aland Chang Trophy. Instead that went to Geoff Aimers for his win over second seed Quentin Johnson. Aimers and Nicholls finished second equal on 4½.

2013 Otago chess club AGM – 13 February

The 2013 committee is largely the same as 2012 and comprises:
President: Terry Duffield; Vice President: Geoff Aimers; Secretary: Bob Clarkson; Treasurer: John Sutherland; Director of Junior Play: Quentin Johnson; Past-President: Alistair Newbould; Junior Rep: Leighton Nicholls; Committee members: Hamish Gold, Brent Southgate.

Blitz tournament – 6 February

Waitangi Day saw again only seven players ready to compete, including Robin Templeton, a passing tourist from Glasgow, and newcomer Santosh Mallappa. As usual the clock proved the decisive factor in most games. Top seeds John Sutherland and Quentin Johnson only managed half a point between them from their first two games, leaving the filed wide open. It was Leighton Nicholls who managed to nurse his early lead through to the end. Final scores:

1 Nicholls 4½/6; 2 Templeton 4; 3 Johnson 3½; 4-5 Mallappa & Sutherland 3; 6 Ben Clayton 2; 7 John Armstrong 1.

2013 Opening night – 30 January

As only seven players turned up for the opening night, a new event was invented in place of the usual match between the President and VP's teams.

two teams were formed, one of three players and one of four, and these played a mutual simultaneous exhibition against the other over four boards, each team member taking turns to make a move at each board. Clocks were used to keep track of whose move it was. The team of John Sutherland, Geoff Aimers, Boba Clarkson and Geoff Adams prevailed over the other team of Quentin Johnson, David Reid and Ben Clayton by 3½ – ½. One blunder by each team member on a different board proved sufficient to lose the three games, with the last one drawn.
