Otago Interschool Teams Chess Championship 2026

Run according to the NZ Chess Federation Interschool Championship rules

Dates and Venue: Two separate tournaments: Intermediate and Primary on Saturday 6 June at Trinity Catholic College in Dunedin (See final 2025 Scores Primary and Intermediate), Secondary on Sunday 14 June at Otago Boy's HS in Dunedin (See final 2025 Scores Secondary) - see the entry form for details

Schedule: Players meeting at 12:30pm. Play will commence ASAP after 1:00pm. Prize-giving approximately 6:00pm.

Entry Fees: $60 per team of four

Otago Under 13 Chess Championship 2026

Date: Saturday 8 August 2024

Venue: Otago Chess Club, 7 Maitland Street, Dunedin (by The Oval playing fields)

Director: The Tournament Director will be Quentin Johnson (Otago Chess Club Junior Development Officer)

Eligibility: This event is open to players under 13 at 1 January 2026. Players may enter as individuals or as a team of three players from the same school. Parents of children under 9 years old must contact the DOP before they enter their child in the event.

Format: Six games in total, limit of 20 minutes thinking time per player in each game.

Schedule: Players meeting at 1.00pm. NB Late entries (after 1.00pm) may not be accepted. Prize-giving shortly after 5.00pm. Parents/caregivers are requested to be at the venue by 5.15pm

Prize Fund: There will also be prizes for leading place holders as well as special prizes including the best girl and best school team.

Entry Fees: Individual entry fee: $15.00

Team entry fee (3 players): $30.00

Otago Junior (Under 20) Chess Championship 2026

Date: Saturday 22 August 2025

Venue: Otago Chess Club, 7 Maitland Street, Dunedin (by The Oval playing fields)

Format: 6 Round Swiss, rapid time limit of 25 minutes for the game.

Schedule: Players meeting at 12.00pm. Late entries (after 12.00pm) may not be accepted. Play will commence 12.30pm. Prize-giving shortly after 5.50pm. All parents/caregivers are asked to be at the venue by 6.00pm.

Director: The Tournament Director will be Quentin Johnson (Otago Chess Club Junior Development Officer)

Eligibility: This event is open to all juniors (under 20 on 1 January 2026) residing in the Otago/Southland region. Players may enter as individuals or as a team of three players from the same school. Parents of children under 10 must contact the DOP before they enter their child in the event.

Prize Fund: The prize fund will be contingent on entries. Cash prizes to Otago/Southland title-holders (Open, Under 16, Under 13 champions). There will also be special prizes which will include the best girl and best school team.

Entry Fees: Individual entry fee: $20.00

Team entry fee (3 players): $40.00

Otago Westpac Trophy Open Rapid Tournaments

Format: 6 Round Swiss, rapid time limit of 20 minutes for the game with a 5 second delay for each move (Bronstein). NZCF rated. New Zealand players who participate in NZCF rated tournaments are required to be a member of an NZCF Affiliate or Associate Chess Club or directly registered with NZCF. If you are not NZCF registered, the Otago Chess Club will register you to the NZCF for one month for $5 added to your entry fee.

Schedule: Clubrooms open from 11:30am for Entries accepted up until Players' meeting at 12:00pm, but if entries exceed 40 players, those who have registered by email ahead of the day will be given preference. Play will commence at 12:30pm. Prize-giving approximately 5:30pm.

Venue: Otago Chess Club, 7 Maitland Street, Dunedin.

Entry Fees: $20 each tournament (Plus $5 regsitration fee if required). Payment online in advance or in cash on the day)
